How to Get Into Arunachal Pradesh

The region of Arunachal Pradesh (AP) is a standout of the Seven Sister states of North East India. Here is a guide for Permit for foreigners:

Permit:

  • Visit any of the Deputy Commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh offices. Commonly those visiting NE India fly into Guwahati, which has an office.
  • Have a copy of passport and visa stamp, a copy of your Evisa might be asked for but is not required
  • You’ll fill out a form with general information and places visited in AP. It’s recommended you put in a lot of places just in case. The officer on duty told me all the places to write in
  • $50 USD in INR
  • The officer can email you the permit once it is granted so no need to hang out in Guwahati.
  • Solo Travelers: If traveling alone you will only be allowed access to Tawang for a 10 day pass HOWEVER, the officer can wait to submit your application with someone else thus granting more locations and longer stays. You do not need to stay with the person.
  • Once received, print multiple copies because you’ll have to show at AP state border and hotels. The border holds a copy and hotels might not return your copy so best to have multiple but 2 at the minimum.

Why do you need a permit? Well this area, as you will see, contains a lot of military due to China’s close proximity. The government doesn’t want people running around out here all willy nilly. They like to keep tabs of you.
